Jesus Christus
The name Jesus is the Latin form of
the Greek Jesous. Jesous comes from the Hebrew Jehoshua or Jehovah
is Salvation. We know that God, Himself named Jesus. "Then
the angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor
with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and
you shall name him Jesus.'" (Luke 1:30-31)
The name Christus is Latin for the
Greek Christos which is the equivalent for the Hebrew word for Messiah
meaning anointed. The Jews for many centuries referred to their
anticipated savior as "the anointed". The word Christ,
therefore was originally a title for Jesus who was referred to as
Jesus the Christ or Christ Jesus. Over time the word Christ became
part of His proper name as the early Christians came to identify Jesus as
the Messiah foretold in the Old Testament.
