Ave Maria
Ave Maria, Latin for Hail Mary, are
the first two words of a prayer said by thousands of Catholics each
day. Mary is shown here as a young girl listening to her mother, St.
Anne. Almost all that is known about Anne and her husband Joachim
comes to us through legend. One such legend has it that an angel
visited Anne to announce that she was to have a child after years of
childlessness. Anne made a promise to dedicate this child to God.
Although not much is known about
Anne, she and Joachim are honored by the church for being the parents of
Mary who nurtured her and taught her so that she could become the Mother
of God. It was their faith in God that became the foundation for
Mary to endure the death of her son on the cross and to continue to
believe.
The Feast of St. Anne and St
Joachim is celebrated on July 26th.
