Social Ministry

"He has told you, O man, what is good;
         And what does the LORD require of you
         But to do justice, to love kindness,
         And to walk humbly with your God"
Micah 6:8

The Social Ministry program of the Parish of St. Agnes Cathedral is focused on helping our parishioners to recognize and respond to their Baptismal call to discipleship. Our ministry is rooted in scripture and guided by Catholic social teaching, and seeks to educate and provide a means by which individuals and the parish community can use their gifts to serve the poor and vulnerable and to work for justice locally and throughout the world.

The Gospel of St. Luke (Lk 4:18) provides the guidance we need

TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR
in a world where millions lack basic necessities of life;

TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES
when so many are imprisoned by poverty, addiction, ignorance, discrimination, violence or disabling conditions;

TO RESTORE SIGHT TO THE BLIND
in a culture where the excessive pursuit of power or pleasure can spiritually blind us to the dignity and right of others;

TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED
in our communities  where economic and moral forces leave people without real hope.

Hungry Long Islanders...How Can This Be?

The campaign will apply the Catholic Charities USA study, Poverty in America: A Threat to the Common Good, to Long Island,

 Each month there will be a focus on a particular aspect of LI hunger and planned activities to engage people of all faiths to join in this campaign.
