The 70 Voice Cathedral Chorale was formed in
1980. Entrance into the Choir is by audition/interview and is made up of
trained volunteers from the Cathedral Parish and neighboring communities and
professional singers who give of their time and talents and desire to sing in a
choir of high quality. The Choir has one professional recording.
The Choir has sung
at St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York City, the National Shrine in Washington, D.
C., as well as premiering Gygory Orban's Missa Quarta in the
Cathedral of Salzburg, Austria. In addition to singing regularly at the
10:30 Sunday liturgy, the Choir sings at some extraordinary liturgies such as
Christmas and Easter. In 1998, the choir performed John Rutter's Gloria
and Te Deum at Carnegie Hall with the New England Symphonic
Ensemble. The Chorale opened the Jubilee Year by performing Beethoven's Symphony
No. 9 with the 60 Piece South Shore Symphony and New York City Opera
soloists in the Winter of 2000.
The Special
ensemble, the Cathedral Schola has been seen live on Diocesan Television
from the Cathedral on Good Friday services. The group is made up of
advanced members of the larger choir. They performed a concert of French
Sacred Music including Faure's Requiem with the St. Peter's
Chamber Singers of Bayshore in March of 2002. The group specializes in
music of the Renaissance Period.
All members of the
Choir are volunteers who give of their time and talents for the Glory of
God. In the tradition of Westminster Choir College, it is the conductor's
goal to take a group of dedicated singers from a church and form them into
choirs of good quality.
The choir is
presently directed by Michael L. Bower.
