Liturgical and Sacramental Definitions - Ambry

Ambry

The three small "houses" on the wall behind our baptismal font is called the "Ambry." Every Catholic Church has one. It is the cabinet where the holy oils are stored. Three oils are kept in the Ambry: oil of the sick, oil of catechumens, and sacred chrism which is used for baptisms, confirmations, priestly ordination and consecration of altars. Oils for the whole diocese are blessed by the bishop at the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday.
